Heather Cox: Poetry, Mole People, and One Beautiful Chapbook

When you think of mole people, you may think many things: tattered clothing, short statures, offensive odors, cavernous establishments. What you don’t think of is Heather Cox, though that’s about to change; she’s been hard at work creating poetry that exposes the secret lives and tribal affairs of these societies.

Unexpected, thought-provoking, and highly entertaining, her poetry has been receiving attention lately from some very smart editors. She has several poems out and forthcoming, which are listed below. Join me in hearty congratulations to Heather Cox!

Her poems "Ten Things You Need to Understand about The Mole People" & "Ten Things The Mole People Would Never Tell You" are forthcoming in Toad Suck Review (formerly Exquisite Corpse Annual) as a feature "The Mole People... Exposed!!!"

Her poems "God, Forsaken" & "How Quickly a Woman Evaporates" were chosen as finalists in Mid-American Review's 2012 Fineline Competition (final judge Amelia Gray) and will be published in MAR's fall issue as Editor's Choice selections, the final issue edited by Michael Czyzniejewski (Chicago Stories).

Her poems "I was thinking about T.S. Eliot" & "4AM Remember" are forthcoming in Midwestern Gothic's Nostalgia issue. Her poem "What I know of barns" is forthcoming in PANK (print).

Red Lightbulbs: Online and Dangerous

Heather is coming off a string of big news! She has recently been published in Red Lightbulbs! Her poems, "Fire When Ready" and "What She Told Me From The Brigg" can be viewed here! Her literary magazine, Ghost Ocean Magazine, recently announced the winners for it's first Chapbook contest! And she is currently, probably at this very moment, hard at work on her thesis, and will be reading a selection at the Gage Gallery, with other Graduates, next Thursday! Stachniak Poem Published in Word Riot

Zander Stachniak, current MFA candidate in poetry, not only has the honor of having the second best name starting with "Z" (after Zoilo), but now has a poem published in Word Riot! Appropriately titled, "How to Survive a Hangover: Jeff Goldblum Describes How He Knows that Today is Going to be Worse than Yesterday", the poem uses intense literary language in the most concise space imaginable. Word Riot is sort of a big deal. It's been around since 2002 and has published up-and-coming writers. They like edgy! They like challenging! They like unique voices! Luckily for them, Zander has been described as all of those things, in many different contexts. So it's a perfect fit! Zander is a co-assistant editor and copyeditor at Ghost Ocean Magazine. He also has work published in Future Cycle Poetry, The Driftwood Review, and The Medulla Review.
