<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5xDRXp7HlsncITIqAF-84aHoe97fYbSLP_Woh42Cph80wqnDJCoDS020y_f5ap1ceSZQXTSiHKhsFSOG7YcCRQ4BQNjkFkcOEzgzYAQtklvMsESeNi53s6x8DyLu0yfpxYk_u0Fum448S/s1600/AP.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5xDRXp7HlsncITIqAF-84aHoe97fYbSLP_Woh42Cph80wqnDJCoDS020y_f5ap1ceSZQXTSiHKhsFSOG7YcCRQ4BQNjkFkcOEzgzYAQtklvMsESeNi53s6x8DyLu0yfpxYk_u0Fum448S/s1600/AP.jpeg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
In<i> High Rise Stories</i>, Audrey Petty compiles first-person accounts from former residents of some of Chicago's most iconic public housing projects.<br />
<br />
<i>Booklist</i> says that the book "accomplishes its mission to give voice to public housing residents tenfold but is equally successful as a significant work of American urban history." And George Saunders writes that "Audrey Petty and her team have recorded and edited these stories in a way that is joyful, novelistic, and deeply moving. <i>High Rise Stories</i> radically expanded my understanding of human beings."<br />
<br />
Audrey Petty's writing has appeared in <i>StoryQuarterly</i>, <i>Callaloo</i>, <i>The Massachusetts Review</i>, <i>African American Review</i>, <i>The Oxford American</i>, <i>Saveur</i>, <i>ColorLines</i>, and <i>The Southern Review</i>, among other publications. She is an associate professor of English at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.<br />

Aaaand We're Back.<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">The fall edition of the Roosevelt University Reading Series kicked off last Monday with a reading from yours truly. There was a good crowd, and they had a lot of great questions, and everybody seemed to have a nice time. But let's not dwell on the past, because we've got big news.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">LINDSAY HUNTER IS READING AT THE GAGE GALLERY ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 7!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">If you've ever read Lindsay's work or seen her read, you know why that sentence deserves all caps and an exclamation mark. If you haven't read her work, let's fix that right now. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">There's a nice selection from her most recent collection of short stories, <i>Don't Kiss Me</i>, at the <a href="http://www.thenervousbreakdown.com/tnbfiction/2013/07/excerpt-from-dont-kiss-me-by-lindsay-hunter/">Nervous Breakdown</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">While you're there, why not find out how things went when <a href="http://www.thenervousbreakdown.com/tnbfiction/2013/08/lindsay-hunter-the-tnb-self-interview-2/">she interviewed herself</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Now that you're excited too, here are the details:</span><br />

familial relations, the complex emotions that come with those relationships,

mortality, morality, mental health.<i>The Upper Peninsula Misses You</i>
explores the exactness where place and people meet at reality and mesh of

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Writer-in-Residence for Roosevelt’s MFA program, poet, and
essayist, <a href="http://kathleenrooney.com/" target="_blank">Kathleen Rooney</a> is proud to announce the release of her latest novel
in poems, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Robinson-Alone-Kathleen-Rooney/dp/0983700141/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1350736940&sr=8-1&keywords=robinson+alone" target="_blank">Robinson Alone</a>, out now from <a href="http://goldwakepress.com/" target="_blank">Gold Wake Press</a>! The project is based on
the life and work of Weldon Kees, and has been ten years in the making. Join me
in congratulating Kathleen Rooney! </span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">The Nebraska-born poet, painter, critic, and musician Weldon Kees
traced a brief, bright path through midcentury America before vanishing in
1955, an apparent suicide. Among the poems he left behind are a particularly
unsettling four that feature the mysterious Robinson: both a prototypical
member of the smart set—masking his desperation with urbane savoir-faire—and an
alter ego for the troubled Kees himself. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></span></div>

<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">In <b><i><span style="font-variant: small-caps;">Robinson Alone</span></i></b><i>,
</i><b>Kathleen Rooney</b> performs a bold act of literary mediumship,
conjuring Kees through his borrowed character to sketch his restless journey
across locales and milieus—New York, San Francisco, the highways between—and to
evoke his ambitions, his frustrations, and his skewed humor. The product of a
decade-long engagement with Kees and his work, this novel in poems is not only
a portrait of an under-appreciated genius and his era, but also a beam flashed
into haunted boiler-rooms that still fire the American spirit, rooms where
energy and optimism are burnt down to ash.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<br />
Fair question.<br />
<br />
I don't know.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7OwYAhyphenhyphen9VftpyC11DYaiFWXurbYFzEQZBXmfktGplhewuzELlLiz_x6q0lwBo08tDmT4E4VvhaTe0flJVGNqVbQVuGV50jykjooUmdsptRTwvibom5to67cjkSyufwoXQVLTb59J-Yl4/s1600/170px-Cuttlefish.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7OwYAhyphenhyphen9VftpyC11DYaiFWXurbYFzEQZBXmfktGplhewuzELlLiz_x6q0lwBo08tDmT4E4VvhaTe0flJVGNqVbQVuGV50jykjooUmdsptRTwvibom5to67cjkSyufwoXQVLTb59J-Yl4/s1600/170px-Cuttlefish.png" /></a></div>
<br />
But I do know this:<br />
<br />
Number one: <a href="http://juked.com/2012/09/allegory.asp">http://juked.com/2012/09/allegory.asp</a><br />
A story up at Juked, pretty cool!<br />
<br />
Number Two: <a href="http://hobartpulp.herokuapp.com/preview/web_features/the-art-of-fiction-skateboarding">http://hobartpulp.herokuapp.com/preview/web_features/the-art-of-fiction-skateboarding</a><br />
An interview at Hobart about skateboarding and writing, hard core!<br />
<br />
Number Three: <a href="http://www.biographile.com/review-of-every-love-story-is-a-ghost-story-a-life-of-david-foster-wallace/6753/">http://www.biographile.com/review-of-every-love-story-is-a-ghost-story-a-life-of-david-foster-wallace/6753/</a><br />
His review of the DT Max bio of David Foster Wallace at Biographile, hey, that's awesome!<br />
<br />
Number Four: An event, a panel, a something to do, an act of participation, <b>THIS THURSDAY, 11--12, Harold Washington Library.</b> For real, its a panel discussion about digital story telling, and collaboration, and the like. Its part of something called media week, and includes Roxanne Gay, Pat Somerville, and Sara Levine. You should go, because, well, you should. I mean, a presence on the inter web is kind of a must these days: <a href="http://socialmediaweek.org/blog/event/the-electronic-corpse-crowdsourced-storytelling/#.UE4FfaSe7Rc">http://socialmediaweek.org/blog/event/the-electronic-corpse-crowdsourced-storytelling/#.UE4FfaSe7Rc</a><br />
<br />
Thank you Kyle Beachy for your far reaching tentacles!<br />
<br />
Remember when you realized your school teachers had parents?<br />
<br />
Its kind of like that.<br />
<br />
Be strong my doves,<br />
